Location: [gRPC API](https://developer.m-files.com/APIs/gRPC-API/index.md) > [Vault API](https://developer.m-files.com/APIs/gRPC-API/vault/index.md) > [Electronic signatures](https://developer.m-files.com/APIs/gRPC-API/Reference/MFiles.IRPCElectronicSignatures/index.md)

HTML version: https://developer.m-files.com/APIs/gRPC-API/Reference/MFiles.IRPCElectronicSignatures/AddEmptyElectronicSignature/

Badges: `Vault API / standard` `write` `session` `returns metadata structure version`

Adds empty (unsigned) separate signature objects to an object for one signature, or for all
signatures that its workflow requires.

- **Service:** [Electronic signatures](https://developer.m-files.com/APIs/gRPC-API/Reference/MFiles.IRPCElectronicSignatures/index.md) `MFiles.IRPCElectronicSignatures`
- **gRPC method:** `/MFiles.IRPCElectronicSignatures/AddEmptyElectronicSignature`
- **HTTP (mf-http-grpc):** `POST /grpc/v1/add-empty-electronic-signature`
- **Request:** [`AddEmptyElectronicSignatureRequest`](https://developer.m-files.com/APIs/gRPC-API/Reference/MFiles.IRPCElectronicSignatures/AddEmptyElectronicSignature/index.md#request)
- **Response:** [`AddEmptyElectronicSignatureResponse`](https://developer.m-files.com/APIs/gRPC-API/Reference/MFiles.IRPCElectronicSignatures/AddEmptyElectronicSignature/index.md#response)
- **Book and level:** Vault API, standard
- **Kind:** write
- **Session:** Required: the session ID from LogIn in the mfiles-session-id-bin metadata.
- **Idempotent:** no
- **Returns metadata structure version:** yes (in the mfiles-metadata-version-bin trailer)
- **Streaming:** none (unary)

## Remarks

- Requires the vault rights listed in the service overview, and read and edit access to the
  object.
- The object must have a workflow; otherwise the call fails because the Workflow property is
  not set.
- With an empty `signature_identifier_can_be_null`, the server adds a signature for every state
transition of the object's workflow whose signature settings are required and stored as a
separate signature object. With an identifier, it adds only that signature; an identifier that
no transition of the workflow uses fails with "Not found.", and one used by several
  transitions fails as ambiguous.
- A signature that the object already references is not added again.
